Felipe de Mendiburu was born on Thursday, November 5th, 1953, in Chuquibamba, a district of Condesuyos province in Arequipa, Peru. He is the second son of four children of Leonidas de Mendiburu Cruz and Doña Carmen Victoria Delgado Velarde. He began his elementary studies at 921 School in Belen neighborhood and his secondary school education was at San Luis Gonzada de Chuquibamba School, founded in 1850. Later he continued his studies at Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina in Lima city and graduated in 1977 with a degree in Statistical Engineering. He also did post-grade studies in Systems Engineering at Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (UNI) (National University of Engineering), finishing in 1982. In 1978, he began teaching statistics and informatics at Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina (UNALM), engineering and applied mathematics postgrade courses at UNI (National University of Engineering), statistics at Universidad del Pacífico, and informatics at Universidad San Martín de Porras.

As a professional he continued teaching and started the task of a Statistics Consultant in many different institutions:  

  • Construction of statistical models and simulation models at Instituto Geológico Minero y Metalúrgico (Mine and Metallurgy Geological Institute) (1979-1982).

  • Information handling of the Peruvian Maize Germplasm Bank at UNALM (1983-1987).

  • Tropical Lands Projects and experimental designs models (Yurimaguas - Peru-  University of North Carolina, EEUU )(1983-1985)

      

In addition, he made consultancies about Computer Science at the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) and carried out many systems in the Land Conservation project of the Costa Rica MAG (Department of Agriculture and Livestock), such as RNCR (Costa Rica Natural Resources Systems), Agrosys (Agricultural Database System in the net for the agricultural production information handling), and other systems in Peruvian universities, such as:

Since 1990, Felipe de Mendiburu has been involved in a lot of statistical consultancy in the agroforestry broad field for the ICRAF (International Centre for Research in Agroforestry) and for the UNALM Forest Department. He participated in many Statistics and Experimental Designs Seminars and Congresses in the agroforestry broad field.

In 1994, he entered the CIP (International Potato Center) as a Statistics advisor and there he has been performing many training and consultancy activities. Also, he participated in many scientific publications. Nowadays he continues his statistic labor as a Statistics and Informatics professor at UNALM, being his teaching specialty Forestry and Natural Resources Management; furthermore, as a Statistics Consultant at CIP and performing the maintenance of the Agricolae module in R for the CRAN (Comprehensive R Archive Network).
